“Music”, as we know, is an intangible and ephemeral art. It exists only as it is heard, disappearing right after it is played. A musician can preserve it over time only by notating it in sheet music or capturing it in a sound recording. For these reasons, with this work dedicated to A.C. Jobim and containing some of my finest arrangements for Solo Guitar, I have sought to fulfill two needs that have increasingly grown within me over the past few years. The first specifically, was strictly personal and followed my desire to preserve part of my repertoire accumulated over many years of my career, either on printed sheet music or, in a more modern way, as a digital document.
The second need involved sharing this work with other musicians, thereby contributing to their growth and artistic enrichment. This is perhaps my way of taking on the same role as the great musicians whom I was fortunate to have as teachers during my early studies fulfilled. I hope that this work will attract not only advanced guitarists with established techniques but also anyone, regardless of skill level, who has a genuine curiosity about these guitar styles and techniques. From personal experience, I know that a new chord sequence or an unusual approach to harmonizing a melody can open up new perspectives even for guitarists who may not focus on intricate right-hand technique or use a “pick”. The music charts, tablatures, diagrams, and tutorial CD will make these arrangements easier to learn, significantly reducing the time needed to master them.

Antonio Carlos Jobim’s compositions have always exerted a particular charm on me, thanks to their beautiful melodic lines, characteristic rhythmic patterns, and their evocative connection to Brazil— an exotic and alluring country, rich with mystery and distant from so much of the world. These inspiring qualities lead me to play and arrange many of his songs for solo guitar over the course of my career. This small anthology of tunes by ‘Tom” Jobim stands as a humble tribute to his memory and to his remarkable contributions to Brazilian music, which have profoundly influenced and enriched countless styles of contemporary music around the world.
